Abstract

Legal education in Nigeria is a well-structured method of training and raising legal practitioners, following years of rigorous study of specific courses in law in all its spheres, ultimately leading to the conferment of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Barrister at Law (B.L) degrees, and subsequent call to the Nigerian Bar. Artificial Intelligence (AI), a form of non-human intelligence created through programmed instructions, has significantly impacted various legal domains. This paper advocates the integration of AI technologies into legal curricula as a paradigm shift that enhances educational experiences while preparing students for a technology-driven environment. Employing a doctrinal research methodology, the paper analysed primary sources, such as statutes and case law, as well as secondary sources, including journal articles and online materials. The findings reveal that AI literacy is yet to be fully integrated into legal education in Nigeria, and several challenges exist, including poor funding and inadequate facilities. The paper recommends that the Council of Legal Education develop comprehensive curricula that incorporate AI literacy, ethical considerations, and technical skills; establish faculty training programmes to keep teachers updated on AI advancements, thereby enriching student learning, among other recommendations.
